Ask the Herbalist

Dear Bob Liebert,

I would like to ask what would be the best herb or herbs to take for a nervous stomach which seems to be brought on by stress, anxiety or upset. I have problems with my digestive system, mostly burning at the top of my stomach where the ribs come together. I care for my mother and for my husband and at times feel overwhelmed and have periods of anger which I keep inside mostly due to the stress. I have studied your web site and am very impressed but am confused to what might best fit my problem. I prefer natural healing and believe very strongly. If you could direct me to the herb or herbs that would best suit my problem, I would greatly appreciate your help and time.

Than you
Carole

Dear Friend,

Two herbs thought of in "nervous stomach" are the extracts of HOPS and CHAMOMILE. Hops is thought of for "worrier" types and the Chamomile for over-sensitive types; though of course both come into play in emotional upheaval, and I would use both. The DIGESTAID Formula can be taken to tone down acid and soothe, taken as needed. PASSION FLOWER would be a good one to take to calm from anger and anxiety, take daily. Finally, a liver herb, like DANDELION ROOT can clear liver congestion, which can cause "flushes" of anger and emotional upheaval.

Yours in healing,
Bob Liebert, herbalist
