Dear Bob Liebert,

Hi, my mother-in-law has been suffering from chronic dizziness for 2 years now. At first it was just when she stood and now it is all the time, sitting standing and lying down. She fell last year and hurt her leg and since then she hasn't walked quite right (which may or may not be a part of the dizziness). She looks "drunk" when she walks as though she can't find her footing just right. She also has slurred speech (her dentures are a little bit too big as she has lost weight since they were first fit). She is unable to write or drive because of the dizziness. She also has very fitful sleep - she talks and kicks and grabs in her sleep, but she has no recollection of this when she wakes up. This has been going on for quite some years.
Her mind functions just great though. She remembers everything, can hold a conversation and is very alert.
She has tried conventional treatments with no success. She was taking Celexa (to calm her nerves and valium to really calm her nerves)and a sleeping medication as well. The MRI's that she has had have all come back negative, but there is something very wrong.
I looked through the suggestions you had for dizziness, but none of the
questions outlined all these symptoms. If there is something she could try, would you please advise. Thank you so much!

Elycia

Dear Friend,

I would suggest that general nervous tension could be the cause; which would not show up on tests. I would begin with trying one herb extract; the BETONY, taken 3x a day. It aids brain function while being tonic to the nerves, esp. the nerves as they affect brain function; dizziness being one of its specific uses in the right cases. One could begin with this and add PASSION FLOWER before bedtime if extra help is needed for sleeplessness. GINKGO and PRICKLY ASH extracts can be added later, if circulation to the brain needs to be addressed.

Yours in healing,
Bob Liebert, herbalist
