Ask the Herbalist

Dear Bob Liebert,

There have been some studies conducted regarding the use of Prunella Vulgaris in the treatment of Herpes Zoster (shingles) and Herpes Simplex Virus 1 and 2. Studies have reportedly shown that Prunella Vulgaris was particularly helpful in reducing associated neuralgia in shingles and HSV 2 and also helpful in preventing recurrent outbreaks of HSV 2. Do you have any knowledge of the dosage required to acheive results and if the extract is taken daily is it likely to become less effective over time?

Laura

Dear Friend,

A good program may be to use the Prunella for 6 weeks or so, and then in courses of up to a week at first sign of symptoms, or at times of ununsual stress or low immune system. Good herbs to add would be Echinacea (used similarly) and Thuja extracts; the Thuja should be used 1 to 2 weeks on and a week or more off. The Thuja can also be applied externally. Plantain is a good application for pain of herpes and shingles.

Yours in healing,
Bob Liebert, herbalist
