Ask the Herbalist

Dear Bob Liebert,

I had a spider bite me a month ago and since then my body seems to be going haywire. It was not a recluse, but was something that affected my body for sure. The spider bite got really badly infected and then left a scar, but all other bites (chigger bites) just get infected from day one. If I mean infected, I mean infected. It occurs if I scratch them or not. They almost become like miniature boils! Can you give me some advice on this?

Debbie

Dear Friend,

I have seen good results for acute or chronic effects of insect bites with courses of the extracts of ECHINACEA and PLANTAIN, both of which counteract such poisons in the system, and improve ability to get rid of accumulated toxins. We have the HERBAL SALVE which is very effective for chigger bites (has Plantain in it); or a fresh Plantain leaf poultice to any type of bite. Plantain will also prevent infected boils; it wouldn't hurt to put a little of the extract on externally as well.

Yours in healing,
Bob Liebert, herbalist
