Ask the Herbalist

Dear Bob Liebert,

I have a bladder condition described to me as being a bladder instability, which causes me to want to go to the toilet on the hour every hour. even through the night. Especially when laying down if this urge is resisted there is a nagging feeling in the lower groin which prevents further sleep until it is relieved. I experienced a serious head injury at age 20 and am now age 50. A urologist who I have been working with stated this instability was due to the head injury. A local herbalist suggested a tincture of Cranesbill, Starflower oil and Zinc tablets, this I have tried but feel no improvement. Now that I have come off the urologist's prescribed medication all the old symptoms have returned with a vengeance.

Dear Friend,

It sounds as if there is a problem with both nerve and bladder function. The Cransebill is an astringent for bladder and sphincter tone, but may not address nerve and other functional problems. I would suggest the extract of Gravel Root, the extract of Eryngium, and the extract of Cramp Bark. These address bladder function and neurogenic bladder.

Yours in healing,
Bob Liebert, herbalist
